It takes a profound gift and a selfless heart to produce music of healing power that both grooves and soothes with righteous spirit and technical mastery. Winds instrument master Jowee Omicil is in possession of the keys on his soulful sophomore CD, Roots & Grooves. Playing nearly ALL manner of wind and reed instruments primarily saxophones, clarinet and flutes Jowee has crafted a transfixing 15-song CD melding sounds from ’round the globe, utilizing musicians and technicians from four continents. The music branches from a base of jazz to include the essence of many cultures with indigenous roots in the music of Haiti, the place of Canadian-born Jowee’s extended family roots.

More than a mere player, Jowee (pronounced like “Joey”) is a unique and prolific composer, producer, arranger, vocalist band leader and music instructor who has devoted much of his time to passing down his broad knowledge of musicology to students of all ages. The son of a father who was both a minister and a professor of Theology, Jowee is now passionately focused on sharing his music with the world through recordings and performance. 

 On May 18, 2010, Jowee had the honor of being invited to President Barack Obama’s White House to play his music for its inaugural observation of Haitian Flag Day before 150 VIP guests. With his latest release, Roots & Grooves, Jowee offers a work that is steeped in purpose yet listener-friendly and accessible to all. In essence, that is the only way he knows to approach the making of his music. 

One of the most moving songs is “4 My People.” “I wrote that for the flood victims in Haiti and rededicated it to the earthquake victims,” he states. “That melody is what I wanted them to hear. Haitians are African so ultimately that song is for the world. It’s simple and spiritual, that’s what I want them to feel the journey I am taking them on. I believe firmly in music as therapy.” Another dedication is “Wole” which he wrote for his daughter Marissah Jann. “That’s a victory chant,” he explains, “In my humble opinion, it shows the powerful link between compas, jazz, hip hop and roots music.

Jowee Omicil was born in Montreal, Canada. Though his mother sadly died when he was very young, he remembers her always telling him to finish all the food on his plate “achevez” which he later adopted to mean “achieve your goals.” Jowee was raised by a very strong father, Joseph Omicil, Sr. minister of his own Elim Church of Montreal (“Elim” translating as a place to obtain water), a respected professor of philosophy, and a Black man of Haitian descent in a not-always-supportive Canada. He sternly and singlehandedly brought up five children of outstanding achievement: lawyers, accountants, an actor and Jowee. Joseph insisted that all his children study music. Jowee, though reluctant at first, eventually embarked upon his studies as a spiritual journey and has taken musical arts the furthest in his family.

 On Roots and Grooves, an album rendered in a disciplined two days times, filled with serenely soulful pan cultural Afro-jazz beats and closing with a gospel medley straight out of his father’s church, Jowee has succeeded exponentially beyond expectations. “The saxophone became my instrument to minister to the world,” Jowee concludes, “and I do not take it lightly.” Guertie Nestor’s Q: Mr. Omicil, what is your definition of fashion? March 3rd, 2012 Kafé Kreyol ENT Presented Kompas Un-Cut with Beethova Obas. This event was hosted by Ms. Bernadine Cotin & Mr. Phillip Cher-Aime in Orlando, Florida. Featured acts like Mr. Andre Fouad, open the night with his poetic verses which captivated the imagination of the audience. Prior to Mr. Obas’ performance, Mr. Sem Erase, an up and coming artist, delighted the spectators with his refreshing lyrics. This is what he said. KENNY: “The fans of Kenny, Reginald, and Hollywood will be satisfied because they will hear their singer sing. You take a band like CARIMI, they have 3 singers as well and it has not been a problem at all. It’s all about the music and pleasing the fans. Most of the time the fans come to see the band and enjoy the MUSIC, not only to hear their favorite artists, but they will be satisfied whether they hear DON’T LET GO, CHILD SUPPORT, or any song that Hollywood sings from the Zenglen repertoire. However, when we play with another band and we only have time to play a few songs, this is where we have to put the word TEAM ahead of everything, and I believe that is where we will play our most popular songs with the public.” KM!

We have learned that Nu Look went to a period of hardship for the past few months. The main source of the problem was the two leaders, Maestro Arly Lariviere and Pipo Stanis. Maestro Arly & Pipo didn’t talk to each for a little more than two (2) months, they didn’t talk or discuss anything else but their scheduled gig for the band. Its been a while since well know Disip Bass Player Sexy Beef left the band and moved back to Boston. After a full year with the band Sexy Beef has decided it was time for him to leave because there was lot of things going on that he wasn’t please with. While Sexy Beef was on his way to Boston band Leader Gazman Couleur was already during radio interviews saying that ” Mwen pat konnen si Sexy Beef tap kite djaz la “. Gazman said that he didn’t know that Beef was leaving until the night of Beef last gig when T-Harry told him ” Beef ap kite aswe a wi “. Knowing Sexy Beef and Gazman close relationship i always thought why would Beef do something like that so sudden. Did Sexy Beef told Gazman and Disip Management he was leaving ? This is what we found out from a very close but unconfirmed source. Before Sexy Beef leave the band he had a meeting with Gazman and some of the Disip musicians to informed them that he was leaving the band in the upcoming weeks. PEDRO LUCKY: “Yes I am aware of it. A lot of people want to see if we are for real and how we are going to pull it off. YES, that includes bands, because I did hear indirectly from certain established bands that are not in our lineup.
